This web site focuses primarily on the descendants of Judge John
Berrien of Rocky Hill, New Jersey. I'm not a genealogist. I have
tried to hire a professional genealogist, once. None were available.
So, I decided to try it myself. I've combine several sources from
the New Jersey State archives and made the connection between my
part of the family and the research already done. My personal research
extended to William son of Thomas of Rocky Hill, NJ. On the Generation
pages my lineage is at the top of each page.
While researching, I've discovered some mistakes in family records.
Of course, my focus was on a small part of a much larger picture.
The mistake I found is what ties my part of the family with the
rest of the Berrien's. My great-grandfather (Scudder A. Berrien)
was mistaken for his uncle or at least his name (Isaac Scudder Berrien).
And that his son George was his Fifth child, not his only child.
This oversight may be due to the fact that two cards were used in
the 1850 census and George being the youngest child, appears alone
on the second card. "Genealogical and Personal Memorial of
Mercer County, New Jersey" and again in "A Genealogical
History of the Berrien Family" by E. Renee Heiss.
Once I accepted and had proof, that this was just a mistake, the
rest of the information in these books where a invaluable source.
Also, used for reference "Newtown Annuals" by James Riker.
Of course, I searched those Genealogy web sites that want you to
join their service and make you pay separately for every category
they can come up with. I didn't get a whole lot of usefully information
for my basic membership fee. And hopefully with this site up you
wouldn't have to go there.
If your looking into your family's past and your last name is "Berrien
or Berrian" there's a good chance that we are related. Thanks
in large part to Cornelius Jansen Berrien being the only Berrien
to come to America.
I don't list some references, please refer to the sources I've
mentioned above. All calculated birth and death dates are shown
in years only. I don't consider this site to be complete or perfect
by any means.
The majority of information on this site is referenced from the
research of E. Renee Heiss and her contributors "A Genealogical
History of the Berrien Family". I've found this source to be
the most complete record of the Berrien Family and would highly
recommend buying this book (if you can find it) I've been informed
by Mrs. Heiss that the book is no longer available but that she
is making a CD-ROM and will be selling it through her website. http://home.comcast.net/~renee2181/Berrien_genealogy.htm
Here is her address renee2181@comcast.net
Thank you for taking an interest.
Sincerely,
Dennis K. Berrien
